A plate from the "Galerie des hommes illustres vivans." Portrait is set in an oval with a border inside an ornamental rectangle with an outside border of leaves. The title is engraved on a tablet below the oval within the rectangle. The words "hommes illustres vivans" appear above the image. Wasington [sic]- Later states of the print corrected the spelling of the General's name.

The two accompanying letters in the purchase are a letter dated April 10, 1796 thanking John Stuart of Greenbriar, Virginia for sending Jefferson the great claw of a megalonyx found near Stuart's home and a second letter dated September 21, 1809 to Benjamin Smith Barton describing the loss of Jefferson's vocabularies of Native American languages, stolen and dumped into the James River.

Subject: George Washington sits astride a white horse on a covered bridge, doffing his hat, surrounded by a crowd of women strewing flowers in his path; in the background, two mounted officers and a crowd of men with raised hats. Atop the bridge is an eagle with outstretched wings holding a banner inscribed "Princeton, Monmouth," in its beak; four American flags; garlands of flowers; and another banner that reads, "Battle of Trenton, Dec. 26th, 1776, the defender of the mothers will be the protector of the daughters." "Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1845 by N. Currier in the Clerk's office of the District Court of the Southern District of New York."

Fragment of an ornate leafy border encircling the Declaration of Independence Description of complete broadside from American Antiquarian Society: Image of the Declaration of Independence with facsimiles of the signatures of the signers. At top is a bust length portrait of "General George Washington" with an eagle above him. A portrait of "Jefferson" and "Adams" are on either side of Washington. Framing the text of the Declaration are the seals of the thirteeen colonies.
